Karen Harpp, associate professor of geology, looks over a lava specimen she and fellow colleagues collected this summer from the recently erupted Sierra Negro volcano in the Galapagos Islands. Since 2000, she has had the benefit of monitoring the volcano, watching it erupt, and collecting fresh lava samples, a privilege that few geologists share.
