Alumni Affairs
Ah, it's fall

The mythical "summer lull" never seems to touch our office. We are busy working on send-off parties, reunion 2002, homecoming, the fall alumni board meeting and many other exciting events. When we are asked if we are enjoying our quiet summer, we just chuckle a bit.

You'd think with all this going on, we wouldn't even notice the beginning of the semester, but fall is still a magical time for us in the alumni office. When the first-year students arrive on campus, the energy practically fills the air. Students and families we just met at send-off parties are all smiles. They are thrilled to finally be here. We serve them ice cream on the Merrill House lawn and watch as parents say goodbye with slightly misty expressions. For 63 alumni this year, the journey has come full circle. They start their new role as Colgate parents.

The slide show on that first night of orientation introduces students to Colgate traditions such as "hello," 13, Willow Path, HooDoo, green beanies and "beat Cornell." For the first time, they hear the Thirteen and the Swinging 'Gates sing the alma mater and the fight song. It's only the beginning.

Orientation flies by quickly, classes start and Family Weekend arrives. By then first-year students are in the swing of things, upperclass students have all gotten past excited reunions on the quad, and all are busy with homework, labs and papers. Homecoming is just around the corner. I hope that you will join us this year as our athletic teams battle it out September 28-30. While you are here, take a moment to say hello to a few students on campus or in the stands. They are why we are all here.

Oh yes, one more thing . . . Go Colgate, beat Cornell! Have a great fall.
