The men's and women's crew teams are preparing for next fall's ascension to varsity status with a high-flying spring.

According to coach Fred Cressman, both Colgate's men and women are solid. With the ice off Lake Moraine, the Red Raiders hosted a good Skidmore contingent and posted significant wins.

"We seem to be at least as strong as we've ever been," said Cressman.

The men have a heavyweight 8, lightweight 8, varsity 4 and novice 8. The women have first varsity, second varsity and novice boats.

"We have a coach for every squad for the first time ever," said Cressman, who is joined by Eric Summers '91, Chris Peters and Danna Hinderle.

Cressman and company took 70 students to Florida for spring training this year. In addition to their workouts, crews traditionally paint area bridges and sea walls with school colors. The Red Raiders were delighted to find a Tampa postcard with the fabled Block C prominently displayed.

Along with the southern swing, the Colgate women plan to return to Henley this year.

Speaking of the entire program, Cressman concluded, "The quality is certainly there." JH
