Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.
"We are all connected, even if we're not the same," said playwright and actress Anna Deavere Smith (left). Her performance, which explored cultural differences in America, headlined Colgate's daylong celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy in January. The recipient of a 1996 MacArthur Foundation "genius grant," Smith holds a 1997 honorary degree from Colgate.

During the event, the Sojourners gospel choir (right) also performed, and 13 of the students who had attended the Skin Deep workshop the previous weekend shared stories about encountering racism as youngsters. Workshops and discussions earlier in the day explored King's legacy. [Photos by Timothy D. Sofranko]
