Admission

To provide Colgate graduates with some perspective on selective college admissions in the '90s, we plan to host our second annual Legacy Admission Workshop this summer, on Saturday, July 11. The workshop will provide insight and advice on the selective college admission process. Questions concerning the formation of a realistic college visit list, application preparation and the role of special talents and alumni ties will be addressed.

Our first workshop, held last summer, was a great success. We were pleased with feedback from parents and students that the day's events helped them understand the admission process and feel much more prepared to begin the college search. Our second workshop is designed to provide general advice on college admissions, not to "promote Colgate." Indirectly, of course, the students who visit will become acquainted with Colgate as prospective students, rather than as "the college my parents attended." As one student wrote last year, "I enjoyed talking to other prospective students while our parents sat around and reminisced about their days at Colgate!"

Our intended audience is rising high school juniors and their Colgate parents who are preparing for the college search process. Rising seniors may benefit from the counseling emphasis if they are just beginning their consideration of colleges. And it is not too early for rising sophomores who are thinking about colleges to attend as well. We hope to accommodate all who are interested, but space is limited, and preference will be given to juniors.

The Legacy Workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and will include a campus tour. We end the day with two optional, concurrent sessions: financial aid and financing concerns for parents and a students only question and answer session about Colgate. For a full information session on Colgate, or for seniors interested in an individual appointment, plan on attending regularly scheduled admissions events on Friday afternoon: 12:00 tour, 1:15 group session, 2:00 tour, 2:30 group session, 3:30 tour. Call ahead for individual appointments.

To fully experience Colgate - and to ensure available accommodations - we have reserved rooms for students and parents on campus in Drake Hall for Friday night, July 10. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. A flat rate of $40 per person covers an overnight stay. There is a fee of $12 per person if a room on campus is not needed.

Please register prior to April 15 to ensure overnight accommodations - availability is limited. Call 315-228-7712 to speak with Susan Dolly Lathrop, Director of Alumni Admission Programs, or email her at slathrop@mail.colgate.edu. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
