Hanlon runs in NCAA championship
On Nov. 21, junior Michael Hanlon participated in the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country Championship at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. He finished 121st out of 253 runners, covering the 10K course in a time of 31:09.4. He was the highest finisher amongst runners from the Patriot League.
Hanlon, who was the fifth Colgate runner in school history to qualify for the NCAA Championship, earned a spot by taking ninth at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship in Boston. A first team all-Patriot League selection, he was the Raiders' top finisher in all five races that he ran this fall. He was third in the Patriot League Championship.
Football captures PL awards, makes NCAA playoffs
The football team captured three of the four major Patriot League awards this fall. Head coach Dick Biddle was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year, senior linebacker Jared Nepa was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year, and first-year tailback Jordan Scott earned Rookie of the Year honors.
The Raiders finished in a first-place tie with Lafayette for the Patriot League title, and posted their tenth-straight winning season with an 8-4 mark. The team also made its seventh appearance in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, where it lost in the opening round to top-ranked University of New Hampshire.
Nepa was joined on the first team all-Patriot League squad by junior quarterback Mike Saraceno, senior defensive back Chris Williams, and junior defensive back Geoff Bean. On the second team were Scott, senior wide receiver DeWayne Long, senior tackle Jeremy Wurst, junior center Jake Sulovski, senior defensive tackles Jeff Galletly and Chris Petrone, and sophomore cornerback Cody Williams.
Fall season achievements
Several other Colgate athletes were recognized for their outstanding playing ability this fall by the Patriot League. She was joined on the all-league team by first team selections sophomore Franny Iacuzzi, senior Carolyn Warhaftig, and junior Kellen Kroll, as well as junior Jackie Burch on the second team. Burch was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I team.
In field hockey, senior Dana Shaner was a first team selection, and sophomore teammate Natali Plesniarski was chosen to the second team. In addition, Shaner was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Mideast Region second team.
Devin Deane, a junior, and Eric Anton, a sophomore, were second team all-league in men's soccer, and first-years Jackie Adlam and Katrina Zawojski took second team honors in volleyball.
