Colgate Trustee Chase
Carey ‘76 has served as president and chief executive officer of The
DIRECTV Group, Inc. since 2003. Carey oversees the operations and strategic
direction of The DIRECTV Group companies which include DIRECTV, Inc. DIRECTV
Latin America and Hughes Network Systems.
Prior to joining The DIRECTV Group, Carey was co-chief operating officer of
News Corp. and president and chief executive officer of Sky Global Networks.
At News Corp., he played a central role in managing the operations and
strategy with particular focus on its worldwide television business that
encompasses the FOX network, Fox Television Stations, Fox's cable
programming group, and News Corp.'s international satellite operations.
Among key initiatives he led were the launch and growth of Fox Sports, the
expansion of the Fox Television Stations group from seven stations to the
present 35 stations, the emergence of Fox cable channels such as Fox News
Channel, FX and the National Geographic Channel, and the building of
satellite platforms in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
In addition to serving on boards of Colgate, the DIRECTV Group, and News
Corp. Board, Carey is also a member of the Board of Directors of Gateway,
Inc. and Yell Group plc. Carey earned his undergraduate degree in math and
Colgate in 1976 and his MBA from Harvard University in 1981.
